Lansing Exterior Remodeling
R. L. Rider Remodeling is proud to offer Lansing the finest exterior remodeling services. Our company actually manufactured windows and doors for a period of time in the 1970s and 80s before turning our focus to the installation side of the industry. Exterior remodeling could mean just about anything you want it to as long as it has something to do with the outside of your house or property. We use it as a catch-all term for basically the entire portion of the house that you would see when you walk around your yard. Some miscellaneous items like landscaping and standalone structures are covered in this section as well.

Doors & Windows
Doors and windows protect the entrances to your home and provide light and ventilation. Updating doors can be a simple, inexpensive way to upgrade your home when viewed from the street. You can get creative with single or double sidelites, install an entry detection camera system, or just paint the door a unique color. Windows have about as many flavors as ice cream – double-hung, casement, awning, fixed or picture, transom, slider, bay – we handle them all. From small privacy window replacements to enormous bay window installations, Greater Lansing has a go-to contractor in R. L. Rider Remodeling.
Siding & Insulation
Does the siding on your home or barn look worn down and dilapidated? Is it not protecting the home as it should? You might need to consider repairing or replacing it. We can tackle any type including vinyl, wood, aluminum, and specialty insulated siding. If you decide to upgrade your siding, it can be a really good time to think about insulation as well while there is easier access with the siding removed. This will protect your home from moisture and the elements on the outside, while also keeping it regulated and efficient indoors. If your home is drafty or leaking, then your siding or insulation might need some attention from a professional.
Roofs & Gutters
Roofs and gutters get a lot of wear and tear between the harsh winters and constantly changing conditions of Michigan. From finding and repairing a serious leak to replacing the roof entirely, R. L. Rider Remodeling is the top choice for Lansing. Demolishing the existing roof material and re-installing a fresh replacement layer is a commonly performed task, but is often not done correctly. We make sure to check all the sheathing and framing for rot and other damage before beginning the re-roofing process. Special attention is paid to flashing around chimneys and proper installation of ice and water guard. Many contractors offer unbelievably low prices under the guise of affordability, but in reality, a poor installation from a budget builder will cost a lot more in the long term. Gutters are convenient to redo at the same time, but not necessary. We offer the best in seamless and wooden gutters in both residential and larger commercial sizing.
Fascia/Soffit/Overhangs
One of the most common issues we’ve found with older homes is the lack of ventilation and air movement in the attic space. Improper venting can be solved by removing old wooden soffit boards and replacing them with modern, ventilated, metal soffit pieces. Fascia is the trim that gutters usually rest on so if it’s made of wood and sees a lot of moisture, they might need replacing. Most exterior trim, casing, and fascia is made of PVC composite which can be painted just like wood but has the added benefit of being completely moisture and rot-proof. We’ll advise you during a site survey if your fascia, soffit, or overhangs are in bad condition and approximate time left until a replacement is required.
Dormers/Skylights
Dormers and skylights are an excellent way to bring natural light into your home. Dormers are like a window that extends vertically upward from the roof itself, and they have their own section of roof to protect them. Skylights lay flat and are essentially just a specialty window installed parallel to a roof or ceiling’s surface. These can be motorized and have automatic rain sensors, but they also come in more basic varieties. We have had good luck installing sun tunnel skylights which are smaller and less intrusive than a full-blown skylight.
Masonry
Like everything else, your outdoor masonry takes a beating from Michigan’s mix of bad weather and sunshine. Items like your chimney, pathway pavers, and brick or stone veneers will come into disrepair if left too long without maintenance. While we can help you with maintenance services, we are best-suited for designing and building new masonry projects. Outdoor kitchens are a really nice way to feature beautiful pavers, ornate fireplaces with chimneys, and weatherproof built-in cabinets installed into cultured stone! Brick, stone, and cultured surfaces are all options with our company.
Landscaping
Nothing sets apart a home like a beautifully manicured landscape perfectly accenting the yard and outdoor features. Blending man-made structures with the surrounding nature is tricky to execute correctly. We strive to design a well-balanced landscape solution for you that will work with any buildings you may have on your property. One often overlooked aspect is ease (or difficulty) of maintaining the landscape once it has fully developed. If you have the best-looking lawn and plants in the neighborhood but it’s impossible to mow the grass, what good was all the trouble? No detail is left unplanned with R. L. Rider Remodeling.
Standalone Buildings
Standalone structures like sheds, pole barns, or pool houses are great additions to meet the needs of your property. Separate storage from the house gives completely different environments in which to work or play. Maybe you need some hobby space for your ATVs or trucks, a shed to park your lawnmower and yard supplies, or an expansive pole barn for an all-season basketball court? We take your ideas, help you design an exact solution to meet budget and needs, and then construct a sturdy building to meet all building codes backed with a 3-year warranty.
Whole House Updates
If you’re considering a lot of exterior work such as windows, siding, and roof replacement, then we would call that a whole house exterior update. The most efficient way to remodel or build something is to do everything required in as few phases as possible. The more you break a project up, the less cost-effective it is to do for a couple of reasons. In the case of the above project, if you were to do the roof first, then replace the siding, and lastly the windows, then that is 3 separate projects to schedule and perform. Multiple trips would be required from each subcontractor and some of the work to get a job started is required for each stage e.g. lining up dumpster services or cleaning. Not to mention having to remove some of your brand-new siding to properly install the new windows. There’s nothing wrong with breaking a project into stages for budgeting or time constraints, but in an ideal world, the house would be totally updated under the scope of one job.
